The Human–Animal Relational Practice (HARP) exists to support the wellbeing of those who care for both humans and animals. Our mission is rooted in the belief that when caregivers thrive, communities and the species within them thrive as well. We advance the integration of social work values, relational science, and interdisciplinary care within veterinary and animal-focused environments to improve outcomes for animals, caregivers, and the people who love them.
Founded by Dr. Katherine Compitus, HARP builds upon the established foundations of Veterinary Social Work: grief and bereavement, compassion fatigue and professional wellbeing, the link between human and animal violence, and animal-assisted interventions. Because crisis intervention has become an essential part of supporting individuals and families with animals, HARP recognizes a fifth foundational area that reflects the realities of contemporary practice.
We are a collaborative community of professionals united by a shared commitment to protecting and promoting healthy relationships between humans and animals. Our membership includes social workers, veterinarians, technicians, animal rescuers, sanctuary teams, behavior scientists, and all who provide care across species. This inclusive, One Health–aligned approach strengthens our collective capacity to support the wellbeing of animals and humankind alike.
Welcome to HARP. We’re grateful for everything you do to nurture safer, healthier, more compassionate connections between people and animals.
